In this lesson and the next few lessons, Calais is going to be explaining how to start a band. He will be telling me so much useful information.
The sorts of things will be info like, What you to have before you start a band, Where to look for musicians, What you will need and how to make an advert.
WHAT I LEARNED FROM THE LESSON - BEFORE STARTING A BAND:
So before I start a band Calais said I need to make sure that I am actually interested in the whole music business.
In my case I know for a fact that I am interested in forwarding my career in music. I can't see me doing anything else.
After that I will need to find out exactly what times I am free. I need to make a little chart for the whole week and find out what exact times I will be available. So I can tell the band members when I wil be able to get together with them to either rehearse, chill out, write songs etc.
Then I will need to make sure what kind of musicians I need, what we are going to do and what genre.
So in my case the definite genre would be Metal. I would be looking for two confident mental guitarists and one male metal vocalist.
Once I get the band members together I will need to understand the potential band members and getting the right balance between them. So basically get to know them and what they like.
My idea would be to have at least 10-20 gigs before you properly understand each other. And then after that we should start writing our own material.
WHERE TO LOOK FOR MUSICIANS:
There are so many different places to look for musicians. Here are a few Calais listed:
- College or schools.
- The interent (gumtree).
-Posters, flyers in places like music shops or even on the street. Or even notice boards.
-Edinburgh Gig Guide (probably one of the best for me)
- At gigs or studios.
- Through friends and family.
ADVERTISING:
The final thing Calais spoke about was how to advertise. He was telling us how to make a 'wanted' poster. How to make it appealing to musicians and how to get the exact musician you are looking for.
Here is a ruff example of what my poster would be:
We are putting together a Nu Metal band! And we are looking for a shredding metal guitarist.
We are heavily influenced by:
Five Finger Death Punch
Slipknot
Bullet For My Valentine
Interested? Then keep reading...
We are looking for a guitarist who likes playing and performing metal music. We would prefer if you could do all the main metal techniques such as fluttering, sweep picking, tapping etc.
We were thinking of a guitarist in the style of Synyster Gates (AVENGED SEVENFOLD).
Get in touch and we will tell you more info, or just contact us to get more of an understanding!
